November 7th, 2019

Bernstein began renovations last month on the building, which will be expanded to five stories and about 58,000 square feet and converted to boutique office, featuring amenities including penthouse office and rooftop terrace space.

Carlos Rosario International Public
Charter School - Sonia Gutierrez
Campus

October 24th, 2013

"Some buildings are described as letting in an abundance of natural light. When you first enter the brand new Sonia Gutierrez Campus of the Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School the first impression you get is that light graciously allowed steel to be erected around it. The facility appears to sail, as if it is not made of classrooms and offices but is instead comprised of four stories of wings delicately layered upon one another." Examiner.com

Besides, says business partner Joe Carroll, who owns the much smaller original in New York, St. Alselm is the opposite of the “corporate, probably stuffy, special occasion” images most people have for steak houses. His new corner restaurant, which greets customers at the door with a beefy aroma and is outfitted with banners from sundry fraternal organizations and outward-facing booths the color of creamed spinach, is designed to make customers feel like coming on a regular basis. The waiters wear what they want, for instance. “I’m not a uniform person,” says Carroll, who would rather his staff “dress the way they would hanging out with friends.” Washington Post

An 83-unit mixed-use affordable
housing complex built on the site
of a Shell gas station in Arlington.

December 14th, 2012

"The $13 million, six-story building is designed by Cunningham + Quill Architects and will include ground floor retail space and two levels of below-grade parking. The building is designed around a central courtyard, and the retail space faces Columbia Pike. Plans call for the building to be built on two adjacent parcels - one at 870 South Greenbrier, largely a surface parking lot and undeveloped scrubland, and one at 5511 Columbia Pike, the former site of the Shell station. Though that parcel did require environmental remediation - mostly the excavation and removal of contaminated soil - Welsh says that the previous owner handled it before selling to AHC." Capitol Engineering Group is the
MEP for Proof Restaurant

November 18th, 2006

THE WEEKLY DISHTOM SIETSEMA
Washington Post: Wednesday, November 15, 2006; Page F02

GRAPE EXPECTATIONS: Washington tax lawyer Mark Kuller claims to have hundreds of names in his little black book, but the one that dominates his thoughts these days is Proof. That's the title, plucked from pages of potentials, that the self-described "food freak" plans to put on the 100-or-so-seat restaurant and wine bar he hopes to launch by late March at 701 Eighth St. NW in Penn Quarter.
Proof is "accessible, easy to spell," Kuller explains, and the openness of the name lets him "serve almost anything." Proof also links itself to a major neighborhood attraction: the National Portrait Gallery, whose vast collection of images will be displayed on monitors above the bar.

A frequent flyer and inveterate diner, Kuller plucked design and menu ideas for Proof from such intimate, grape-focused foodie haunts as AOC in Los Angeles, Avec in Chicago and Craft in New York. To staff his project, he looked no further than some of his favorite local dining rooms. Haidar Karoum, the 32-year-old chef at Asia Nora, will head the kitchen. Michael James, the veteran general manager at Teatro Goldoni, will fill that role at Proof. And when Sebastian Zutant returns from California's Russian River Valley, where he has spent three months interning at wineries, the former sommelier at Rasika will be sifting through Kuller's personal wine collection of 7,000 or so bottles, tasting alongside his boss and helping select the labels that Kuller intends to offer at Proof. (We're saving up for the opportunity to sip a vintage or two from Screaming Eagle, the cult California winery, and the owner's '61 Chateau Latour.) Kuller has purchased an Enomatic, from which more than 30 wines by the glass can be measured and poured at the push of a button.

Small plates of mostly Mediterranean flavors, a handful of entrees and a "raw section" of carpaccio, tartare and crudo will make up the menu.

Psst: Fans of Karoum's food at Asia Nora have until New Year's Eve to get their fill.
