E.L. Haynes Public Charter School
December 29, 2010
Capitol Engineering Group is the MEP engineer for E.L.Haynes Public Charter School. "In February 2009, E.L. Haynes was awarded the exclusive right to a long-term lease for Clark Elementary School, a former DC Public School, through a competitive city-wide process. E.L. Haynes will renovate the existing 46,000 square-foot facility, build an addition onto the site, and develop the extensive outdoor space (approximately 5 acres of property) into athletic fields, playspace, and outdoor academic space. This project is not only exciting because it allows E.L. Haynes to continue to expand through high school and to serve more students in all grades, but because it returns an important community asset to its originally-intended use; the former Clark facility will no longer be a vacant building, but will once again serve DC students."

Charter schools are public schools, but differ from traditional public schools in that they are independent and are operated by educators, parents, community leaders, educational entrepreneurs, or others. Funding for charter schools is based on designated local or state educational organizations. Those organizations are responsible for monitoring and assessing the quality and effectiveness of education, but permit the schools to operate outside of the traditional public school education system.
